Abstract: 

In my presentation I will compare three different memory sites, i.d. sites build on the remains of places of imprisonment and extermination, which therefore exhibit the character of ‘semiotic traces'. After discussing the problematic issue of what it means a ‘trace of a traumatic past', I will show how the issue of conservation, transformation, reconstruction of such places always involves difficult and important issues regarding both the politics of memory and the politics of representation.
