 תקציר הדוקטורט:

המחקר בוחן כיצד מפתחי תוכנה מבינים ומיישמים פרטיות בפלטפורמת שיתוף הקוד GitHub. באמצעות ניתוח קבצי README, פרופילים של מפתחים ופרויקטי קוד המגנים על פרטיות ושנוצרו על ידי האקרים, המחקר חושף כיצד תפיסות הפרטיות מתורגמות באמצעות קוד, תיעוד וזהות מקצועית.
בהסתמך על גישות של חומריות דיגיטלית וחקר אלגוריתמים, העבודה מצביעה על המתח בין אידיאלים של קוד פתוח לבין ערכים ניאו-ליברליים של אחריות אישית כפי שהן מתבטאות בפלטפורמת שיתוף הקוד. GitHub מוצגת כמרחב שבו הפרטיות מעוצבת, מתווכת ולעיתים מנוצלת בידי מנגנונים תאגידיים, כמרחב בו מפתחים פועלים בו-זמנית כמגִנים על פרטיות וכמתווכים של תהליכי מעקב.

PhD Abstract:

The doctoral dissertation Developers’ Privacy Perceptions – GitHub as a Research Hub, examines how software developers understand and implement privacy on the GitHub code-sharing platform. Through the analysis of README files, developer profiles, and privacy-protective code projects created by hackers, the study reveals how perceptions of privacy are translated into code, documentation, and professional identity.

Drawing on approaches from digital materialism and algorithm studies, the research highlights the tension between the ideals of open-source culture and neoliberal values of individual responsibility as they are manifested on the GitHub platform. GitHub is presented as a space where privacy is shaped, mediated, and at times exploited by corporate mechanisms, positioning developers as both defenders of privacy and mediators of surveillance processes.
